College of Health Science
The College of Health Science (CHS) at Debark University (DKU), established in 2014 E.C. and becomes operational since December 2015 E.C. Our college currently offers four undergraduate programs: Nursing, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory Science, and Environmental Health. The college employs 40 academic staffs specializing in these fields, as well as in public health and biomedical sciences of whom 80% are Masters and above, dedicated to teaching, research, and community service.
With a student body of 175, CHS admits students primarily through competition and interest. The college features a skill development laboratory (SDL) for practical simulations, equipped with basic teaching tools, though it needs expansion and continuous supply fulfillment. To enhance practical learning, CHS has partnered with Debark General Hospital through a memorandum of understanding, facilitating hands-on experience for students and we are on the way to extend partnership with other institutions.
In July 2023, CHS launched a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) center, accredited by the Ethiopian Midwifery Association. This center aims to create partnerships locally and internationally to enhance health service delivery in the North Gonder Zone and surrounding areas by providing up-to-date on job trainings. The CPD center also aims to attract senior instructors, thereby strengthening the college’s academic standing.
Looking ahead, CHS plans to introduce new undergraduate programs, including Medicine, to address the educational needs of the community and the nation. To achieve these goals, CHS is focused on expanding partnerships with various stakeholders.
